The project, character and plot

Our BTEC level three drama courses have started a new project which is a classic English play called “Look back in anger”. We have been instructed to select an extract from the play to perform for a minimum of ten minutes, these extracts can be performed by individual members of the class or in groups, and the maximum number of members to a group is three. I am currently working on this project in a group of three with my co performers Ryan and Danielle. In my group I will be playing the character of jimmy, Jimmy is a well-educated working class man who has a temper and a short fuse, in the play he comes across as having an extreme lack of empathy due to him treating his wife with cruelty and offending the people around him however we witness as an audience at the end of the play jimmy discarding this when given news of his unborn child’s death. During the play we also discover as an audience that the character of jimmy is a broken one, this is where Jimmy talks about the experience of being a young boy and watching his father die slowly over time. The character of jimmy is also very opinionated and enjoys discussing subjects such as politics and the news; he thrives of human interaction of an argumentative nature. In “Look back in anger” The character of Jimmy treats his wife Alison so horribly that she leaves him after being prompt to by her friend Helena who takes her place as jimmy’s lover while Alison is absent, Alison then returns and Helena leaves Jimmy enabling Jimmy and Alison to start over and work on their relationship after their realisation the reality. Other characters include cliff that lives in the same flat as Jimmy and Alison and is a character to them both and also the Colonel who is Alison’s father and talks about his experiences with Jimmy and as a war veteran. As a group we have decided on performing pages 24 to 28 in act one, we chose this extract because it displays a wide range of emotion giving every character in the script equal lines and stage presence.
